Tips on Finding a Job
By Taffene Hollingsworth, NCBC Historian | October 29, 2011
DID YOU KNOW, there are several tips for our membership to consider when looking for the next job opportunity:
DO'S
- Include a cover letter with your resume to articulate why you're a fit for the position to which you've applied.
- Showcase your accomplishments on your resume, not just your job duties.
- Answer questionnaire questions in complete sentences with sufficient detail. This is an opportunity for you to stand out from other applicants.
- Research the company to which you have applied to find out more about them.
- Verify the legitimacy of the employer before submitting any information to them.
DON'TS
- Don't sloppily apply for jobs. If it's worth doing, it's worth doing right; so take the time to proofread, capitalize, and make your application look professional.
- Don't give out your social security number or other vital information to a company over the phone or in an email.
- Some jobs require more information than others, such as a driver's license. Don't provide this information until you have interviewed face-to-face and have accepted a job offer.
- Never provide your bank account information, credit card information, or a utility bill in an employment application.
- Don't be lured into paying upfront fees or making a required purchase to get the job.
- Don't transfer money, accept products for re-shipping, or conduct business transactions on behalf of foreign companies promising business opportunities.
Finding a great job is a rewarding experience that can be challenging at times.
May the Lord continue to smile upon you.
